Pedal the Cause ’16- I ride in honor of my Mom
Hi everyone. Nancy, here, owner of the Saint Louis Fun in the Sun shops. I am riding in Sunday’s Pedal the Cause Sunday.
This is my story:
I don’t want anyone to experience what my family and I did on Christmas Eve, 2012. By 11am that morning, we witnessed my mom die. My brilliant, generous, gentle but tough Mom died a painful death, not only a painful death, a violent death. Cancer got her and it was brutal. I mourn still and this is why I ride.
We were all in self-protective denial. Not her, no way. She would somehow beat it and stay with us longer, a little longer, any bit longer. She was so strong, so determined, so positive. We loved her beyond what we realized until it was a possible that this woman who so naturally and beautifully gave her all to so many was not going to be around for us to take her presence for granted any longer. We needed her. My Mom, my boys’ Nana can’t leave us this soon, 70 years old is too young.
She was my Dad’s love of his life. Of course his instructions were “any means possible” but the doctor and nurse team’s valiant efforts could not reverse what cancer was doing to her body, shutting down everything, literally breaking her heart along with ours. It may have taken the young nurse on top of the bed, stradling my Mom’s exhausted body, pumping her chest for us to know, along with chemo and radiation and experimental trials, that everthing possible was performed to prolong her life, at the end perhaps just for our sakes.
I ride for her. In honor of her. I wish it wasn’t too late for her. I ride for my friends and family. I ride for you and your family.
My Mom. My uncle. My cousin. My friend. My friend’s child. My friend’s Dad. Your parents. Your friends. Your Aunt. Your spouse. God forbid, your child. Please God, no, my boys.
Pedal the Cause and my target (with your help):
A world without cancer.
I really appreciate a donation of any amount. I’m a big believer that any difference makes a difference! I am optimistic that soon the results of the cancer research we are funding together will make a BIG DIFFERENCE in someone’s life, everyone’s life!
Much love and gratitude,
Nancy Kaiser McGee
